Final Fantasy 16's PS5 File Size Pegged At 90.1GB

Does anyone know of a concrete date when the review embargo for this one is?

Physically, and since it's all on the disc (minus the small day 1 patch), I'm perfectly fine with the file size. It's nice that the use of UHD discs is the standard on PS5.

Damn and that's with PS5's much better compression.

Not bad. Considering Jedi Survivor is 160g. That 4tb SS upgrade was totally worth it.

@Uncharted2007 demo don't tell all though, I would prefer to read the reviews before spending 70 pounds

Not really a big deal. I mean, a standard PS5 can fit like 8 games of that size on there right? Who’s going to be playing 8 games of this size at once?

@Zoidpilot4 $70 is steep for 99% of games to me. I'll be waiting for a price drop on this one, but it's on my list.

Next up: Finale Fantasy Mystic Quest remake.

It would be double that if it were a western developer making this.

I'm not a computer technology guy, but I find it really weird that an older Call of Duty can be over 100 GB while FFXVI is only 90 GB. At least that 100 GB is a nice free space for a better game to go into now 😉

Yeah I went digital, had some vouchers to use. I don't usually keep games on my SSD once completed so this isn't an issue for me.

Wow... i never realised that bluray's could go up to 100gb these days.
FF7Rebirth will be absolutely massive.

@Nem PS4 used blu-ray which maxed out at 50gb. PS5 uses 100gb UltraHD's.

@Zoidpilot4 a review is just someone’s opinion, they can tell you what a game is like but if you have a demo, you can see it for yourself, seeing as the demo has the mechanics, a bit of the store and how it plays.

Why read a review when you can literally experience what these reviewers will play!?

I still don't know... I have all FF games (main line) but I miss turn-based fight style, so I gave up FFXV. Maybe I pick FFXVI in ps plus, but don't plan to buy it anyway.

@number1024 again, it only gives so much. I also watch gameplay videos and listen to those who have played it on what they think.
I cam play a game for an hour and love it, then two hours later it will either get too hard, or boring, or have a level design that stresses me out. Mate, 70 pounds investment is worth thinking about before spending it. If you don't get that then, well, clearly you got money to burn

@PlasmaticSnake it’s all about compression. Some developers are better at compression than others, and some just don’t care enough. Perfect example of that would be Star Wars Jedi Survivor. No reason that game had to be 160gb, especially when this game, which likely has far more dialogue likely more music, graphically just as impressive manages under 100gb

90 GB is not that big these days.
Anyway, even with just the internal drive I never have issues with space, because I delete the games I finish.

Wow, over the span of this weekend this site managed to milk FF16 with three articles about file size and two more about early leaks. That's as thrifty as using a teabag for multiple teas.

@Uncharted2007 I already did, along with the eikonic challenge, I'm wanting to hear accounts of how the game opens up if it does. Because surprisingly, my pre demo concerns about combat are not as much a concern now. As it is repetitive but when you playing it versus watching it is less mundane. Aside from view inhibiting effects and some issues with the camera.

I'm actually far more hesitant on picking this up because of the extremely. Basic level design I've seen so far and what's been shown in the gameplay previews. If the game is mostly that which is the demo, I'm definitely waiting on this one. However I'm hoping there is more to it aside from a few minor open areas, and walking down very linear basic level designed corridors to the next empty battle area and/or cut scene.

For me, no matter how gripping the story. May be, if every aspect of gameplay is funneled through this very basic level design, i know from the last FF entry, that that empty rpgs in terms of design are not for me. Yet I will say the story and combat are decent. From what I've seen, and aside from the terrible ghosting with the motion blur, it's playable thus far in the 30 fps (although, the very confined limited opening areas may be masking issues later).

Well tea isn't coffee so it's bland from the first cup, so that's not a great comparison

I pre-ordered the digital version. I added a 2TB SSD internal and a 1TB SSD external (for PS4 games) when I got the PS5 so the size of it isn't an issue.

Roll on Thursday, Going to make some space tonight. This will be my main game for the next couple of months until Starfield comes out

Well this puts a bit of pressure on me to finish Jedi Survivor in 4 days, and looks like I won't be doing a NG+ playthrough like I planned. Gotta make space for the main reason I bought a PS5, after all

@Uncharted2007 Personally I don't think the demo is long enough to form an opinion if you're waiting to see how RPG/FF is is or isn't. 8t didn't really answer my questions about it, so I'm also looking forward to reviews. Although I fear they won't be reliable either as I feel like most critics already formed their opinion months ago, so I think playing it (once it's on sale) will really be the only way to find out.

Like you I don't really buy anything at launch anymore with the pricing, so the wait isn't a big deal. If it's 43 by black Friday I'll buy then... Later if not. If the reviews confirm my fears maybe only it's old and cheap lol.

@Zoidpilot4 yeah I'm.disapointed in the lack of party members control and equipment. Also how many villages etc we come across as exploration is one aspect I like. This just so far reminds me of a ff14 expansion that was rejected so they made a single player out of it

The fact that FF7 Rebirth needs 2 discs just goes to show just how much bigger it will be compared to FF16.

@Zoidpilot4 That's true but also meaningless. Square always overestimates sales by large margins then complains that games that sell extremely well failed to meet expectations. Given the hype they built im sure the game will sell very well. I'm also sure that even if it tops spiderman in sales square will believe it underperformed.

I think comparing sales to rebirths sales will be the only useful indication of how it was received.

It's a summer release in a dismal economy with consumer spending way down and new higher prices on games for a single platform release. Post Hogwarts and pre Spiderman.... You'd hope they'd manage sales expectations but they won't. It'll sell well no matter what but they will be disappointed with it anyway.

@NEStalgia agreed. I think it will be more trusted "content creator" reviews with some cross referencing that will help. As you can see the games media establishment seems to have already made up their mind (are doing pre release marketing).

@KundaliniRising333 Yeah, it's unfortunately par for the course, and while I usually want to trust larger publications over random tubers, on cases like big release games when the larger publications act like marketing arms of the publisher, it's hard to take the commercial reviews too seriously. I joked the other day elsewhere that we already knew this was goty in 2020 by the time the launch trailer was done. But it's half a joke because it's true.

I really believe the game itself will be somewhere between good to great. What I can't figure out still is for what audience and if I'm that audience or not. But I somehow doubt reviews will answer that honestly anywhere. I don't really see any scenario I won't just need to buy it to find out.

Yeah Xbox owners are getting screwed. The Series X can read UHD Blu Rays but the games are still shipped on standard dual layer Blu Rays. So they max at 50 gigs. And most developers don’t ship multiple disc games on Xbox. You tend to download the rest.

With that said, I think Microsoft made that decision based on three things about most Xbox players.

1. Gamepass is so prevalent in the community.

2. I have this sneaking suspicion that more Xbox gamers are all digital compared to PlayStation gamers, who do lean more digital now but there is still a significant base of people who buy certain games on discs.

3. Smart delivery and how it works. Games on multiple generations of Xbox (like Elden Ring) use Smart delivery. The disc contains one version of the game (in the case of Elden Ring, the Xbox One version, which does fit on a single Blu Ray) but if it detects it’s being used in a Series X it automatically downloads the version for Series X from the Xbox store and uses the disc as authentication.

I don’t think the Xbox community is as phased by it as the PlayStation community.

The Switch community by far is the most centered around physical versions. I’m an oddball on Nintendo Life because my collection of about 40 Switch games (except for Smash Bros) is all digital on Switch.

On PlayStation my purchased games are about 50/50 split between physical and digital. Single player I try to get on disc but I buy multiplayer games or internet required games (like Diablo IV and GT7) exclusively digital. But I’ve also been claiming every PS plus game since 2014 on PS4. So my digital collection does dwarf my overall physical collection.

Either that or it’s using higher quality assets.

I’ll use Diablo IV as a good example. On PC the game gives you the choice on whether to download the “ultra” texture pack which is basically 4K art assets for the game.

If you don’t download them the PC version sits at about 35-40 gigs. If you install them it’s the same size as the console version, about 80 gigs. So the console version has the 4K textures present. On PC you get a choice.

Could be the same with FFXVI and FF7 Rebirth. Considering the quality of the character models on Rebirth compared to FFXVI I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s using less compressed textures. Which would explain the size difference quite easily.

@zupertramp Yes, it does, but it's still nice that the standard on PS5 is UHD discs so even some games of this size can be fully on the disc. It makes installing games quicker, and it's a bonus if hard drive space is tight for some people since they wouldn't have to download much of anything again if they had to uninstall it at some point.

@OrtadragoonX I can't say you're wrong on anything as obviously I don't know why things are so different on Xbox as opposed to the PS5. It wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me if the Series X was my main console, but I still find it disappointing that they fail to make using UHD discs the standard for new gen only versions of the games. There's no reason , and including a second disc to actually give real physical versions of multi-platform games back when every game was coming out with just one release (some are split into two separate releases now). It wouldn't have cost that much more to include a cheap Blu-ray disc.

Smart Delivery is great and all, but it shouldn't be used as an excuse as to why physical versions of games are sometimes worthless on Xbox. Gears Tactics, a game that is under 30 GB on either generation of consoles, has a small portion of each version on the disc. You should only have to download a small portion of at least one version of the game, not basically the whole game of both.

It's almost impossible not to have more digital games than physical ones with PS Plus monthly free games and so many games releasing digital only. In the end, I'm not really criticizing you and more just criticizing Xbox for general laziness and cheapness as to why a lot of physical copies of games are borderline worthless only on Xbox. There's the occasional one on PS5 too, but it's far less.

I finally broke and downloaded the demo last night after learning that progress carries over to the retail version.

It absolutely blew me away! Best opening 2 hours in any FF game, and I have been there since FF1 as a wee lad.

What ever, i find demos 100% make me waste less of my money and reviewers are mainly paid to give reviews. If someone gets a free copy, no matter how much they bang on about their review isn’t bias is bs! Every human on Earth Ave everything they do is bias to some degree. I rather have more demos i can play so i can make up my own mind!

I really need to play the demo. I'm probably one of the few gamers who never cared at all for DMC and this is 100% giving me those vibes. I wish it was traditional Final Fantasy in an ARPG format, but it really doesn't appear to be. I'll try the demo, but definitely have reservations.

@number1024 This is why I prefer Ps plus and Gamepass, as I can play it longer and gain a better understanding of the game. I didn't mean it as in I trust the reveiwers, because I don't. I just mean it helps me round off what I think. In fact, often, when a critic hates a game, I know I'm gonna love it.

I'm autistic, so it's hard to get my point across. In short, I agree with you, only at the same time demo's don't provide me enough information, and it is everything to do with how my brain is wired. Takes me a long time to pull the 70 pound trigger
