Hideo Kojima Clarifies Involvement in Death Stranding Film Adaptation

A film adaptation of a game in which the majority is spent with the protagonist on their own, walking.

What could possibly be more interesting.

I can only imagine where I might be in life if I liked myself as much as Kojima likes himself. Not even sure I'm knocking him here. I'm quite jealous of an existence clearly and completely devoid of any self doubt.

Kojima will probably make it work, but the game is very much a movie in its own right, so it’s making a movie adaptation of a movie. So it’s a remake, basically

Why not a Metal Gear movie instead?

@Exerion76 Naturally the movie script will be condensed and focus on vital deliveries, plot points and the characters involded. I doubt the movie producers will go for 'the platinum' and show 300+ deliveries alone on foot, bike or zip lines etc.

@Exerion76 Metal Gear movie is currently in development hell and Kojima doesn't have any control over that IP.

This seems pretty pointless as the game is just like a movie. Even the actors look like themselves.

While there were some nice touches in Death Stranding I'm afraid I just found it rather boring to play. I certainly don't think it warrants a movie adaptation.

Bring it on! I'd happily watch a Death Stranding movie. It has a groundbreaking story with very unique ideas, more people should experience the story, especially those who can't play video games.

Death stranding is by far not cinematic and nothing like an actual movie! Why, because Kojima never heard of any self constraint and most of all never heard of tight editing. Even given a generous three hour runtime, there's no way he'd get all that mostly pretentious mumbo jumbo into a movie if he doesn't adapt his workflow.

I miss the simpler days of mgs. While heavy handed with convoluted exposition it still showed signs of structured storytelling, while also grasping philosophical and geopolitical themes.

However, give an "auteur" a blank check and your most likely going to alienate everybody else with the results.

Since Kojima is deeply involved, we can expect to see naked Norman Reedus since it is essential to the plot.

Well, the thing is it isn't quite an adaptation, it's a spinoff. A separate story from the one told in the game, but set in the same world. So the comments about how they're going to adapt the game into a movie, or that it's "already a movie" aren't actually relevant.

Kojima (still) using Sony's money to buy his way into Hollywood. (Through the b-list no less)

I strongly feel this should have been a mini series instead of a film. HBO or Apple TV could have pulled it off quality wise. This story doesn't suit the feature length format whatsoever. It obviously won't be for everyone but could pull a lot of people into the world much like The Last of a Us did with non gamers. I've only played MGSV and DS when it comes to Kojima but the latter was an incredible experience only truly possible in video gaming. I hope the sequel is necessary.

Critics will love it ,audiences not so much

This game has a beautiful atmosphere and visuals, and an amazing soundtrack. Other than that, it's a cluster of famous actors with a pretty convoluted, nonsensical story. Despite liking Kojima, and it's important for someone like him to make these kinds of games, taking risks like that, I still think that the game's story doesn't have anything special, and that not everything he does is a work of art. And I think the movie will show that.

Kojima will make it work. The cutscenes in Kojima's games were always really good.

Although I respect Kojima's designs, I think having this guy on the set would be an absolute nightmare for a director and producers. He is going to be prattling in their ears constantly with himself at the center of the conversation. I would hope that once production starts, they don't have Kojima on the set.
With a background in this area, I can say with certainty that movies are not video games and vice versa. Kojima is a brilliant man and a fantastic game creator, but when it comes to looking past himself, he has a blind spot.

I think this movie will bomb, as most people won't get it. If Kojima can cram all that into a 2 hr movie and find a director that can make it work, then more power to him, but I just don't see it happening. Is Norman even in this?

@Orpheus79V Yes.This is from an IGN interview that Collider covered. IGN asked if characters from the game would appear in the movie. He said 'new characters and elements would be introduced and it wouldn't just be a retelling of the game.'

The article expanded a little with this quote from Kojima,
"The failure of film adaptations of games from a while back has led to a lot of movies that cater to gamers, right? That's why they have the same kind of look as a game. I don't want the 'Death Stranding' movie to be like that. Rather, I'm taking the approach of changing and evolving the world of 'Death Stranding' in a way that suits film well. I made 'Death Stranding' to be a game, and games are games. There's no real need to turn them into films."
